Vehicle Lighting Questions
Yes, when they're fitted and wired correctly. The core requirements are that auxiliary driving lights operate only with high beam and switch off automatically when you select low beam, that they're fitted in pairs and mounted symmetrically about the vehicle's centreline, and that they don't obscure your headlights, indicators or number plate. A light bar is treated as a driving light, so the same rules apply — it can't be wired to a switch that lets it run on low beam. Individual states add their own requirements and enforcement varies, so tell us where the vehicle is registered and we'll wire it to suit.
Because lumens measures total light produced, not where it goes. A light that throws its output in every direction can quote a big lumen figure while putting very little on the road at 300 metres. What matters for distance is the intensity at a given range, and that comes from the reflector or lens design. This is why a well-engineered light with a lower lumen claim will routinely out-perform a cheaper one claiming twice the output. If you're comparing, ask about the beam distance rating rather than the headline number.
Spot beams throw a narrow, intense column a long way down the road, which is what you want at highway speed on open country roads where you need warning of stock or wildlife well ahead. Spread or flood beams light up a wide area close in, which suits tracks, corners and slower going where the hazard comes from the side. Most people running a pair fit one of each, or a combination unit that does both. Tell us the roads you actually drive at night and we'll pick accordingly.
They need their own. Auxiliary lights draw more current than the factory headlight circuit is designed to supply, so tapping into it risks dimming, blown fuses or damage to vehicle wiring. We run a dedicated loom with its own relay and fusing, triggered from the high beam circuit rather than powered by it. On newer vehicles with can-bus systems that also avoids fault codes. LEDs draw far less than the old halogen units, so battery drain is rarely an issue on a single pair — but a light bar plus work lights plus camp lighting adds up, and that's a conversation about your charging setup.
