Interior Protection Questions
Only if they're designed to be. Most modern vehicles have a side airbag built into the outer edge of the front seat, and a cover that isn't made for it can stop that airbag deploying properly. Covers designed for airbag-equipped seats use a specific breakaway seam on that edge that tears open under deployment. We check whether your vehicle has seat-mounted airbags before we quote, and we won't fit a cover that isn't rated for it. It's the main reason we'd steer you away from a cheap universal set.
For a work vehicle or anything that sees mud and water, yes. Moulded mats are made for your exact footwell, so they cover the full floor area and their raised edges hold spills rather than letting them run over the side into the carpet. Universal mats cost less and suit a vehicle that stays fairly clean. The one thing that matters either way is that the mat is retained properly at the driver's position — a mat that slides forward and interferes with the pedals is genuinely dangerous.
The relevant Australian standard is AS/NZS 4034, and barriers tested to it are designed to hold a load in place during a crash rather than let it come through into the cabin. Many workplaces and fleet operators require a compliant barrier as a condition of use. We fit vehicle-specific barriers that mount to the manufacturer's designated points, because a barrier is only as strong as what it's bolted to.
Do it before the first trip, not after the first stain. Coatings and covers both work by getting between the contaminant and the fibre, and once something has soaked into upholstery or carpet you're into cleaning rather than protecting. If the vehicle is already a few years old it's still worth doing, but we'd usually recommend a proper interior detail first so you're not sealing dirt in.
