Awning Questions
A rated bar or platform system, and enough roof capacity left to carry it. An awning bolts to the side of your bars or platform, so the load sits off-centre rather than straight down — which is why factory rails alone often aren't enough. Weight matters too: a roll-out side awning is typically in the mid-teens of kilograms, and a 270° wraparound is usually well north of 20kg before you add the mounting brackets. Against a dynamic roof rating that's often around 75 to 100kg on a wagon, that's a meaningful chunk, especially if there's already a platform and a tent up there. We check the manufacturer's rating for your vehicle against what's already fitted before we recommend anything.
A roll-out side awning is lighter, cheaper, quicker to pack and covers one side of the vehicle. That suits most people most of the time — day trips, beach stops, a shaded spot to cook. A 270° wraps around the rear and gives you shade regardless of where the sun is, which earns its keep when you're set up somewhere for several days. It also costs more, weighs more and takes more roof space. If you're honest about how often you camp versus how often you stop for lunch, the answer usually picks itself.
No, and this is the most common way awnings get destroyed. An extended awning is a sail with a lever arm attached to your roof rack, and a gust can bend legs, tear fabric or damage the mounting points on the vehicle. Always peg it down and use the guy ropes, even for a short stop. If the wind picks up or you're leaving camp, roll it away. Wind damage is generally not covered by warranty, because it's a use issue rather than a fault.
A little of both, and it's mostly the bars rather than the awning. An awning in its bag sits below the airflow off the roofline on most vehicles, so it adds less noise than people expect. You will notice some fuel penalty from the whole roof setup — bars, platform and awning together — particularly at highway speed. Mounting the awning as low and as close to the roofline as the vehicle allows helps, and so does taking the whole lot off if the vehicle spends months at a time doing school runs.
