Car Window Tint Installation at Altapac Kotara

Altapac opened in 1972 as a window tint shop, and our Kotara store on Park Avenue still tints cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs for drivers from all over Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. We keep 3M, SunTek and SolarGard film on the shelf, cut it to your exact car, and most cars are done in about two hours. We're right across from Westfield Kotara, so a lot of people drop the car off, do the shopping and come back to it finished. For an overview of the films and how they work, see our main automotive window tinting page.

Book a day ahead and we'll have the film ready for your car when you pull in.

Newcastle's Original Tint Shop

Tint was the first thing Altapac ever sold. More than fifty years on, it's still done at Kotara by people who tint cars every working day, not as a sideline to something else.

Choosing Your Film

Darker doesn't always mean cooler. How much heat a film keeps out depends as much on what it's made of as how dark it looks. These are the films we fit at Kotara.
Everyday

Carbon Shadow

Our everyday carbon film. Good heat and glare control, a wide range of shades, and no metal in it to interfere with your phone or GPS.
Carbon · 80% to 5% · up to 46% heat rejection
Factory match

Carbon Black

Made to match factory privacy glass, so the windows you tint sit evenly with the dark glass your car came with.
Carbon · non-metallised · up to 57% heat rejection
Step up

CarbonXP

A nano-hybrid carbon film that keeps out more heat and infrared than standard carbon, across the same wide range of shades.
Premium carbon · 75% to 5%
Most heat out

CeramicIR

Our best infrared rejection. It keeps heat out without going dark, which makes it a good pick for the front windows where the legal limit is lighter.
Ceramic · lighter look · best infrared rejection
Darkest

HP Supreme

A very dark metal-hybrid film with strong glare control. At this darkness it's only legal on certain windows of certain vehicles, and we'll tell you where it can go.
Metal hybrid · 4% · seven shades

Ask the tint team

Tell us your car and how you use it, whether that's school runs, a work ute parked in the sun all day or long trips with the kids in the back. We'll tell you which film is worth it.

All of these block 99% of UV and carry a limited lifetime manufacturer's warranty, on top of our own workmanship warranty.

How Dark Can You Go in NSW?

These are the limits for a standard passenger car. The percentage is how much light gets through, so the lower the number, the darker the window.
Side view of a car with four numbered windows. One, the windscreen, may only have a tinted band across the top. Two, the front side windows, can go no darker than 35 percent. Three, the rear side windows, and four, the rear window, can go no darker than 20 percent. 1 2 3 4
1
WindscreenClear, except a tinted band across the top
2
Front side windows35% or lighter
3
Rear side windows20% or lighter
4
Rear window20% or lighter
The windscreen band can cover the top 10% of the windscreen, or down to the top of the wiper sweep if that's lower. The rear limits apply when the car has a mirror on each side.
It's measured through the glass and the film together. Most cars leave the factory with some tint already in the glass, so a 35% film on a front window can end up darker than 35% overall. We allow for that when we choose your film.
  • No mirror finish. Tinted windows can't reflect more than 10% of light.
  • Vans and utes built to carry goods can go darker behind the driver. Ask us whether yours qualifies.
  • Other states differ. If your car is registered outside NSW, tell us when you book.

What to expect at Park Avenue

Looking After New Tint

New film takes a little while to fully dry. A bit of haze or a few small water bubbles in the first days is normal and clears on its own, usually within a few days in warm weather and up to four weeks when it's cool or humid.
  • Windows up for 48 hours. Winding them down too early can lift the bottom edge.
  • Hands off for two days, and don't clean the film for the first four weeks.
  • Leave the rear demister off for about four weeks.
  • Clean with an ammonia-free product and a soft microfibre cloth. Warm water with a little baby shampoo works well too.
If anything is still bubbling, lifting or patchy after 30 days, bring it back to Kotara and we'll sort it. Full details are on our tint aftercare and warranty page.

Tinting Questions

It depends on the car, how many windows you're doing and which film you choose. A small hatch costs less than a dual-cab ute or a seven-seat 4WD, and ceramic film costs more than carbon. Call Kotara on 02 4941 4444 with your make, model and year, tell us which windows you want done, and we'll give you an exact price over the phone.
Most cars take about two hours. Bigger 4WDs take longer, and so does removing old tint first. You're welcome to wait, but most people head across the road to Westfield Kotara and we'll call when it's ready.
For a standard passenger car, 35% on the front side windows and 20% on the rear side and rear windows, measured through the glass and film together. The windscreen can only have a tinted band across the top. Vans and utes built to carry goods can go darker behind the driver. Because your factory glass usually has some tint in it already, we pick the film to keep the total on the right side of the limit.
We ask for 24 hours' notice so we can set aside a bay and have the right film cut. In the cooler, quieter months we can sometimes do it the same day, so it's always worth a call. Pop in any time to talk about films and shades first.
Yes. We strip the old film and adhesive, clean the glass and fit new tint in the same visit. It adds time to the job, so mention it when you book and we'll give you a pick-up time that allows for it.
Not with carbon or ceramic film. Neither has metal in it, so phone reception, GPS and e-tags work as normal. If that matters to you, mention it and we'll steer you towards those films.
No. Car window tinting is done at Kotara and at our Maitland store. Our Artarmon and Burwood workshops handle racks, towbars and accessory fitting, but not tint.

What our customers say
Wonderful people to deal with, very good throughout the process and delivered a quality hard lid for my vehicle. Were excellent with any after sales questions, making me feel like they wanted to look after their customers.
Darren M., Maitland
What a team! This is my 3rd set of roof racks I’ve had installed by these legends and this one was by far the most complex on my new work van. I have a pretty high attention to detail and Andrew in the office and Beau installing them absolutely nailed it. Very happy and I would have no hesitation in recommending them. Thanks again
James C., Kotara
Great store to get fitted out for roof racks and attachments for the car. They fitted my first set of roof racks and have helped me out with all the changes to my setup for over 10 years. Great and knowledgeable service too.
