Dash Cam Questions
Only if you want parking mode. Running off the 12V socket, the camera records while the engine is on and stops when you switch off — fine if you only care about what happens while you're driving. Hardwiring takes power from the fuse box instead, so the camera can keep monitoring while parked. It also means no cable hanging across the dash. If you want parking mode, hardwiring isn't optional.
Not if it's set up correctly. A hardwire kit includes a low-voltage cut-off that shuts the camera down before the battery drops far enough to stop the car starting, and we set that threshold to suit your vehicle and how often you drive it. If the car sits for weeks at a time, or you want long parking-mode coverage, we'd normally suggest a small dedicated battery pack rather than leaning on the starting battery. This is the part most cheap installs get wrong.
Behind the rear-view mirror, high on the windscreen, in almost every case. That keeps the camera out of your line of sight, inside the area the wipers clear, and gives it a centred view of the road. NSW road rules require that nothing obscures the driver's view, so mounting position isn't just a tidiness question. Rear cameras go high on the back glass, clear of the demister lines where possible.
A front-only camera hardwired to the fuse box is usually around an hour. Adding a rear camera takes longer, because the cable runs the length of the car. Either way the cable is tucked into the headlining and trim panels and down the A-pillar — nothing taped across the dash, nothing dangling near the airbag. If your vehicle has a curtain airbag in the pillar, we route around it.
