Additional driving lights including LED light bars
To provide information about an amendment to Australian Design Rules (ADRs) regarding additional driving lights including LED light bars.
ADR 13 previously required additional headlights to be fitted in pairs as either two or four lights mounted evenly about the centreline of the front of a vehicle.
Recently, the Australian Motor Vehicle Certification Board agreed this requirement was set before the development of LED lights and light bars and therefore did not allow for new technology.
Accordingly, this means the Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2007 is being reviewed to reflect this amendment.
Roads and Maritime Services has issued an exemption for additional headlights (or driving
lights) for a single light bar to be fitted to a vehicle as per the ADR 13 amendment commencing Monday 25 August 2015.
ADR 13 has been amended to remove the requirement to fit additional headlights in pairs provided the lights:
- Are used in conjunction with headlamps
- Are fitted symmetrically about the longitudinal centerline of the vehicle
- Face towards the front of the vehicle
Pending amendment of the Regulation in line with ADR 13, Roads and Maritime exempt
vehicles from the requirement to fit additional lights in pairs, providing they comply with all other applicable vehicle standards.
